Why Are Scientists Looking At Creatine And Healthy Aging?

Our needs can change as we get older, especially when it comes to our health. Why Muscle Becomes More Important With Age
It's easy to focus on things like heart health, nutrition, or keeping our minds active when we think about healthy aging. Muscle doesn't always get the same attention, even though it has a huge influence on how we move through everyday life.
You don't just use your muscles when you exercise. They're working when you carry the shopping, climb the stairs, get out of a chair, pick something up, or stay steady on your feet. Where Does Creatine Come In?
Creatine isn't something we have to get from a supplement. Our bodies make it naturally, and we also get it from foods like meat, fish and shellfish. What Did The 2026 Study Find?
The recent 2026 study gives us another reason to take a closer look at creatine.
The researchers studied healthy adults between 45 and 65 for 12 weeks. Participants took either creatine monohydrate or a placebo. Some followed a structured exercise and diet program that included resistance and aerobic training, while others weren't following that program.
The researchers then looked at changes in lean tissue, strength, muscular endurance, body fat and cognitive function.
The results were encouraging. Even among the group that wasn't following the structured exercise and diet program, those taking creatine saw increases in lean tissue mass, strength and muscular endurance. In the exercise and diet group, creatine was also linked with improvements in lean tissue, strength and endurance, along with a greater reduction in body fat percentage compared with the exercise and placebo group.
There were also some interesting findings around memory and cognitive function, adding another dimension to the research.
Of course, we don't want to take a 12-week study and turn it into a promise about what creatine will do over the next 10 or 20 years. The study was relatively small and short, and the researchers described the individual cognitive and health-marker findings as exploratory. Larger and longer studies will be needed to see whether these results hold up over time.
But even with those limitations, the findings are encouraging. The changes seen in the group that wasn't following the structured exercise and diet program are particularly interesting because they suggest there may be more to explore beyond the traditional use of creatine alongside training.
And What About The Brain?
The muscle side of creatine is where most of the research has traditionally been focused, but there's another reason creatine is attracting attention as we get older: the brain uses it too.
Creatine is found in brain tissue, where it helps support the energy systems that keep brain cells working. The brain has a high demand for energy, so researchers are increasingly looking at whether having more creatine available could support areas of cognitive function such as memory and attention.
The early research is certainly encouraging. A 2026 systematic review looked specifically at creatine and cognition in adults aged 55 and over, bringing together six studies involving 1,542 participants. Five of the six studies reported a positive relationship between creatine and cognitive performance, particularly in areas such as memory and attention. That doesn't give us all the answers yet, but it does make this an exciting area to keep an eye on.
It's fascinating to see how the conversation around creatine is changing. Something that was once largely associated with muscle and exercise is now being investigated for its potential role in several aspects of health and aging.
Healthy Aging Isn't About Stopping The Clock

For one person, that might mean having enough strength to go hiking every weekend. For someone else, it could mean traveling, gardening, playing with their grandchildren or simply feeling confident getting through everyday activities. These things can become more difficult when muscle strength and physical function decline significantly, which is why supporting these areas before they become a problem makes sense.
An earlier review looking at creatine and aging muscle and bone explored areas including physical performance, falls prevention, and inflammation. The most consistent benefits were seen when creatine was combined with resistance training, which is an important reminder that supplementation works best as part of a healthy lifestyle rather than as a replacement for it.

The foundations haven't changed. Regular movement, strength training, enough protein, a varied diet, good sleep, and staying socially and mentally active all have an important role to play.
