5 Quick Tips to Improve Your Focus

Improve it before you lose it!

3 min read

Staying focused on a task can be HARD, especially when your to-do list is a mile long - or exists only in your head because you’re too scared to write it all down! Maybe you sit down to work, but your phone keeps buzzing, or your mind starts wandering to the most random of thoughts. Whilst it’s true that some people struggle to focus more than others, this is something that happens to all of us. We’re surrounded by distractions and the battle to block them out can often feel overwhelming, but it is possible. This is an ability that can be learned, using whichever techniques work best for you.

So let’s start with some of the most simple things you can do right now to help.

1. Create a Dedicated Workspace

One of the simplest yet most effective ways to enhance your focus is to create a dedicated workspace. This is something that’s become even more important with the rise of remote work in recent years. You need a specific area for work that’s free from clutter and distractions. The last thing you want is to sit down to work and immediately get distracted by the dishes you forgot to wash earlier! Whether it’s a corner of your room, an office, a quiet library, or a cozy cafe table, having a consistent space for work will let your brain know that it’s time to concentrate. So have a look at your workspace, clear away unnecessary items, get your lighting set up just right, organize your equipment and - most importantly of all - ensure you feel comfortable. If you work from a home office with family around… a lock on the door might help!

2. Setting Clear Goals

This seems obvious, right? But you’d be surprised at how many people avoid actually setting clear and specific goals. Why? Well, once you’ve actually written down those goals, it makes them real and the pressure is on. But it doesn’t have to feel that way. It’s all about changing how you think about what you’re aiming to achieve. Keeping your eye on the end goal is a great way to stay motivated without feeling under too much pressure. It also really helps to break down your tasks into smaller, manageable steps with realistic deadlines. You’ll feel far less overwhelmed AND have a clear roadmap for what needs to be done. If you tend to procrastinate (who doesn’t?!), prioritize your tasks based on importance and urgency to stay on track. And don’t be afraid to change things up if you need to; regularly reviewing and adjusting your goals ensures that you stay aligned with your objectives.

3. Using Time Blocking

Time blocking is a powerful technique to schedule dedicated periods for focused work. It works by allocating specific blocks of time in your day or week where you commit to working on a single task without distractions. During these periods, turn off non-essential notifications, close unnecessary tabs on your computer, and focus solely on the task at hand. This will help to minimize multitasking, increase your productivity, and maintain concentration for longer.

4. Regular Breaks

Taking strategic breaks is equally crucial for maintaining productivity and preventing your brain from just saying “nope” from exhaustion! The Pomodoro Technique is a popular method where you work for 25 minutes and then take a 5-minute break. This cycle can help prevent burnout, refresh your mind, and improve overall efficiency. Use the break times to stretch, hydrate, or simply rest your eyes to recharge. One of our favorite apps for this is the Pomodoro Tracker.

5. Supplements to Improve Cognition

Incorporating brain-boosting supplements to your routine can also support your efforts to stay on task. NooFocus is developed with natural ingredients that promote cognitive function and help improve focus and clarity. By enhancing neurotransmitter activity and supporting brain health, NooFocus is an excellent tool to utilize alongside the above strategies.

Find Your Focus Your Way

Improving your ability to focus amidst distractions is a skill that requires practice and patience. Everyone is different and not all of these techniques may work for you, but the ones that do will make a big difference to your productivity. Experiment to find what suits your best and remember that consistency and persistence are key to developing habits that boost your focus. You are capable of so much, even on the days when it feels like your brain is working against you - you have the ability to get it back on track. Give these tips a try, monitor your progress, and celebrate your wins. Once you’ve started, there’ll be no stopping you.
